It is often the preferred mood stabiliser for bipolar II disorder and for people whose main struggle is depression rather than mania. Lamictal must be started at a very low dose and increased gradually over several weeks. Rapid titration raises the risk of a rare but serious skin reaction called Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
